You will start your sightseeing tour with one of the most famous buildings in fes; the University of
Al Kairaouine which is also written as al-Quaraouiyine or al-Qarawiyyin (in Arabic: القرويين جامعة(. It
is considered as the oldest degree-granting university in the world. It doubles as a functioning
mosque that’s why non-Muslim visitors are not allowed inside the grounds. The main gates and
some other entrances are open and may be looked into, but not entered.
Afterwards, you will head to the exotic Bou Inania Medersa, one of the most important religious
institutions of Fes and Morocco. Then after having a lunch break, you will visit Dar Batha in the
medina which is a former palace turned into a museum in 1915 with exploring a large collection
of traditional artifacts. It has a fantastic Andalusian-style Garden at its entrance with varying
types of plants, aromas, sounds, plus mosaics and a water fountain. Inside, you’ll find nice
woodcarvings, Moroccan tiles, embroidery, carpets, and even a ceramic collection from the 14th
century.
Later on, you will go visit the tanneries, one of must visit places in Fes. You might need a scarf
to cover your nose as the smell can be very strong. The leatherwork is so fabulous and can be
found all over the medina. At the end of the day, the driver will escort you back to your hotel/ riad
with a valuable learning experience.
